Quick Tip! - please refrain from any reference that repellents "kill" bugs. They simply repel bugs.

  1. Participants must be in the 5th grade or 6th grade (home-schooled students are welcome).
  2. Every state will have a 5th and a 6th grade winner. Each will receive an award certificate and a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.
  3. There will be two national grand prize winners, one from each grade. Each winner will receive a plaque and a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond. They and their parents (or one parent and one sibling) will be invited to participate in an awards ceremony in June at CDC′s facility in Fort Collins, Colo. (airfare and lodging to be provided).
  4. Artwork should reflect the "Fight the Bite" theme and those exact words should appear on the poster (for examples, see prior award-winning posters). Keep in mind that when using a repellent on children, adult should put it on their own hands and apply the repellent to the children. Also, repellents do not kill mosquitoes or ticks; rather they keep people from being bitten (see more information in our "Helpful Hints").
  5. The theme should be depicted visually in one or a combination of mediums, such as watercolor, pencil, pen, charcoal, spray paint, crayons, pastels, etc. Do not attach any materials, such as glitter or cottons balls or pipe cleaners, to the poster.
  6. Do not include the child′s name on the front of the poster. Permanently attach the completed entry form, clearly written in ink or typed, to the back of the poster. The child also can write his/her name on the back of their work.
  7. The size of the finished poster should no larger than 11 x 14 inches. The poster should be on heavy paper stock and mailed with a stiffener or cardboard in a flat envelope or in a mailing tube. Please do not fold the posters.
  8. Please follow contest rules. Entries that do not comply with the rules, such as incomplete entry forms, will not be eligible for consideration.
  9. Artwork will be judged on:
    • originality of design,
    • reflection of the contest theme and
    • use of color and materials.
  10. Contest packages must be received before or on April 19th, 2010 at the following mailing address:
