Mosquitoes and ticks live across our country and they can make it unpleasant to be outdoors.  More importantly, these pests can spread serious diseases that affect children and adults.  You and your family can help prevent mosquito and ticks bites, particularly by using insect repellents, so you can continue playing and working outdoors. Download the entry form to get started.

Who should enter:

Students in 5th and 6th grades

What you should to do:

Create posters that help others understand how to “Fight the Bite” by using insect repellents and other measures.
Some important points to know are:

  • Kids should ask adults to put repellents on them and to read and follow label instructions.
  • Repellents go on bare skin, not under clothes. Avoid getting it into your eyes and mouth.
  • The best repellents, which are products recommended by the CDC, do a good job of keeping mosquitoes and ticks off of our skin.  The CDC recommends products containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus to repel mosquitoes.  DEET is best to repel ticks.
  • Make sure your home’s windows and doors have good screens to help keep mosquitoes outside.
  • Proper clothing can help keep ticks and mosquitoes off your skin.
  • Visit the CDC West Nile virus web site and www.deetonline.org to learn more.
