Rules & Details

1.  Participants must be in the 5th grade or 6th grade (home-schooled students are welcome).

2.  Every state will have a 5th and a 6th grade winner.  Each will receive an award certificate and a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.

3.  There will be two national grand prize winners, one from each grade.  Each national winner will receive a wall plaque and a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond.  They and their parents (or one parent and one sibling) will be invited to participate in an awards ceremony in May at CDC's headquarters (travel and lodging to be provided).

4.  Artwork should reflect the theme "Fight the Bite" and those exact words should appear somewhere on the poster (for an example, please refer to the 2007 winning 6th grade poster by Mitch Nolte).  Keep in mind that when using a repellent on a child, an adult should put it on her or his own hands and apply the repellent to the child.  Also, note that repellents aren't insecticides and repellents do not kill mosquitoes or ticks; rather they keep people from being bitten.

5.  The theme must be depicted visually in one or a combination of media, such as acrylics, watercolor, pencil, pen, charcoal, spray paint, crayons, pastels, etc.  Do NOT include the child's name on the front of the poster. However, please have this information included on the entry form that is permanently attached to the poster.  The child can also write his/her name on the back of their work.

6.  The finished poster should measure 11 x 14 inches.  The poster should be on heavy paper stock and mailed with a stiffener or cardboard in a flat envelope-please do not fold.  You also can mail the poster in a tube to prevent damage and ensure usability.

7.  The poster must be submitted with a completed entry form, either clearly written or typed.

8.  Please follow contest rules.  Entries that do not comply with the rules, such as incomplete entry forms will not be eligible for consideration.

9.  Artwork will be judged on a) originality of design, b) reflection of the contest theme and c) use of color and materials.

10.  Contest packages must be received before or on April 11, 2008 at the following mailing address: DEET Education Program, 510 Meadowmont Village Circle, Suite 274, Chapel Hill, NC, 27517.

11.  Judges will be representatives of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the DEET Education Program and the Weekly Reader, plus and selected teachers and school nurses.

12.  National award winners will be notified by the DEET Education Program, which also will notify the winner's school and the local media outlets.  State winners will be notified by mail.  A list of winners will be posted at www.fightthebitecontest.org by May 1.

13.  The winning posters (originals and copies) may be displayed at CDC offices and state and local public health agencies.

14.  The winning poster may be used in publications, exhibits, displays, in news materials, videotapes and on Web sites as determined by the CDC and DEET Education Program.

15.  All posters submitted including those by the national finalists and the state winners and all other entrants will become the property of the CDC and DEET Education Program and any applicable copyrights will be held by those organizations.

16.  Further information is available at www.fightthebitecontest.org and www.weeklyreader.com.  Should you have any questions or need more information, please contact the DEET Education Program via 888-No-Bites (888-662-4837) or info@deetonline.org.
